The boys still weren't allowed access to Crage Hall, nor the girls to the boys' schools, but the city centre area of Shiz became an extension of the parlors and lecture halls in which they were allowed to mingle. On a midweek afternoon, on a weekend morning, they would meet by the canal with a bottle of wine, or in a café or student watering hole, or they would walk about and discuss the fine points of Shiz architecture, or they would laugh about the excesses of their teachers. The Charmed Circle is the name given in the novel to all those in Elphaba Thropp's social circle while she attended college at Shiz.

Most of them would later go on to positions of influence and power in Oz.

  • Glinda Arduenna Upland, Elphaba's best friend who would later be known as Glinda the Good, Lady Chuffrey, and briefly Throne Minister of Oz.
  • Boq, a friend of Elphaba and a farmer in his later life.
  • Fiyero Tigelaar, Elphaba's lover and the Crown Prince (later Chieftain) of the Arjikis of the Vinkus.
  • Nessarose Thropp, Elphaba's younger sister who would later become the Eminence of Munchkinland, a tyrant known as the Wicked Witch of the East.
  • Avaric Tenmeadows, a frenemy of Elphaba and the Margreave of Tenmeadows in his later life, as well as a lawyer working for Secret Affairs, a branch of the Palace defense team.
  • Milla, a friend of Glinda and Boq's future wife.
  • Shenshen Minkos, a friend of Glinda and a teacher at St. Prowd's later in her life.
  • Pfannee, a friend of Glinda, later the châtelaine of an atelier in the Lower Quarter of the Emerald City.
  • Crope, a close friend of Boq and Tibbett, and an actor and arts auction house manager in his later life.
  • Tibbett, a close friend of Boq and Crope.
