Frex (Frexspar Thropp) is believed to be the father of Elphaba, and is the confirmed father for Nessarose , Elphaba's younger half sister, and Shell, Elphaba's half brother.

Life

In The Book

In the book, Frexspar lived in Rush Margins as the Unionist minister. He lived with his wife Melena, and later two daughters and a son, Elphaba, Nessarose, and Shell. He tries to keep his 'flock' from following the Time Dragon, and after being physically beaten and failing to stop them, he took to life as a hermit. While Elphaba is growing up he is mortally devastated. He hates her green skin color and this drives him to leave. Unfortunately while he is gone Melena falls in love with a Quadling Glassblower named Turtle Heart. When he returns he also finds himself in love with Turtle Heart. After Melena announces she is pregnant again (with Nessarose) he does not know if it is his child or Turtle Heart's. After his family became missionaries in the Quadling Country he sends his believed to be daughter Elphaba to Shiz University in Gillikin. He also sends Nessarose to Shiz, later sending her shoes with blown glass beads he made himself - which he learned from Turtle Heart - as a parting gift for her first year at Shiz.

Frex tries to make Elphaba take the Eminent position from her sister, stating that she has the birthright, but she refuses. In the book, it states that since Melena doesn't know who the father is, so Nessa is the cherished one because Frex somehow believed that she was the child of both him and Turtle Heart. Unlike the musical, Frex dies after Nessa. The causes of his death are shame and grief. It is never confirmed if he knew Elphaba was not his daughter.

In the musical

In the musical Frex (credited simply as 'Witch's Father') is the 'father' of Elphaba and is the Governor of Munchkinland. He is the real father of Nessarose, whom he adores more over Elphaba (proven by the gift of the silver slippers). Elphaba is told in Act II, Scene II of the musical that Frex had died of shame, once he learned how she disgraced him. Elphaba replies, "Good...I'm glad". Nessarose argues "that's a Wicked thing to say!"

In the original Broadway cast, the "Witch's Father" was played by Sean McCourt, and in the original London cast by Andy Mace. Other actors to portray Frex include Don Richard, Tim Talman, David Stoller and Michael DeVries.
