Novels Musical Films

Are people born wicked? Or do they simply have wickedness thrust upon them.
— Glinda[src]

Glinda Upland, also known as Glinda the Good, and formerly referred to as Galinda is the deuteragonist in the musical film, Wicked. She is a "popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart".[1] In Wicked, she serves as a protagonist throughout movie 1.

Personality

Viewed by many to be a sweet, bubbly and awkward young woman, Glinda actually shows that much of her kind persona masks the need for admiring attention and having her desires met which has caused her to be somewhat obnoxious as she expects things to happen how she wants. During the film, she shows that she does her best to hide jealousy when she is not the center of attention and anger when she is disrupted or not viewed as the most promising sorceress-to-be. When arriving at Shiz, Glinda was upset when she was immediately turned away by a teacher she admired and showed great trouble that the same teacher admitted that she felt Glinda would not live up to expectations placed upon her by others and herself.

Glinda also shows to be quite vain as she takes great care of her appearance and is shallow as she only attempted to win the heart of the prince without giving others a real chance. After playing a prank on Elphaba caused her to see how mean she actually was, she did her best to try to be kinder and did become friends with the future witch. However, when speaking with the Wizard about Elphaba's powers being needed for a grand scheme, she was quick to side with the Wizard as it would ensure her own future of becoming the Good Witch.

History

Not very much is known about Glinda's upbringing prior to the main story. She is greatly implied to have always gotten her way and effortlessly gotten as much attention as she wanted.

Relationships

Elphaba Thropp: Glinda's friend/roommate and future rival. At first, Glinda tried to be friendly to Elphaba concerning her appearance but was right away called out by Elphaba for making empty promises and being false in claiming the opinions others had of her did not matter. When Elphaba began receiving praise and special tutoring from Ms. Moribble, Glinda was very upset as she felt Elphaba was getting something she felt was rightfully hers. When Elphaba was revealed to want Glinda as part of the special classes, Glinda made amends for a prank she planned on Elphaba and began a friendship with her. Unfortunately, Glinda's own desires would undo much of their friendship when she was asked to help push Elphaba to become the Wicked Witch as it would cement her own future as the Good Fairy.

Her parents: Glinda is briefly shown with her parents but they appear to have a loving relationship although Glinda almost conceitedly believed they would miss her more than she would miss them.

Madame Morrible: A teacher at Shiz that Glinda greatly admires and wants to learn from. Unfortunately for her, Moribble was not impressed by Glinda or her lineage and even admitted that she did not believe Glinda would be as good a fairy as Glinda wanted to be. Despite this, Glinda continued to try to gain her approval as she would later help Moribble convince Elphaba to become the Wicked Witch.

Fiyero Tigelaar: a prince attending the school. Like many other girls at the school, Glinda wasted no time in trying to gain his affections and succeeded in doing so although it's not clear just how much she truly feels toward him. It's unclear what became of their relationship after Glinda and Elphaba went to the Emerald City.
