A bottle of the Green Elixir
The Green Elixir is an object in Wicked. The elixer first appears in "No One Mourns the Wicked" in the musical and is only mentioned in the novel.
In The Novel[]
When the Wizard arrived in Oz he gives the drink to Melena Thropp which drugs her and enables him to sleep with her. She then becomes pregnant, and the child is born green-skinned, likely because of the elixir.
In the Musical[]
The elixir is first introduced when the Wizard has Elphaba's mother drink it in No One Mourns The Wicked. Some people believe that the green elixir is what makes Elphaba's skin green. After her mother dies giving birth to Nessarose, Elphaba keeps the bottle as a reminder.
The real relevance of the green elixir comes out during act two. When Elphaba is "melted", she leaves the bottle behind for Glinda. Glinda then recalls the Wizard having an identical bottle from when he offered her a drink from it after Fiyero had left with Elphaba. Having been Elphaba’s roommate at Shiz, she recalls seeing and why Elphaba had it. She discovers that the Wizard is Elphaba's father, and banishes him from Oz.
Trivia[]
- Backstage, there is a milk jug full of the green elixir. This is in case there is any mishaps with the plastic bottles during the course of running the show or if the elixir in the bottle starts to lose its color.
- The bottle used during the dance sequence in No One Mourns The Wicked has a green glow-stick inside to give it luminescence to contrast with the dark stage lighting.
- The elixir is actually green mouthwash.
