The Glikkus is a small region to the northeast of Oz inhabited by the Glikkuns. The small territory is under the jurisdiction of the Emerald City.
Geography and Peoples[]
The Glikkuns are stout, stubby troll-like individuals native to the Scalp mountains of the Glikkus. They mine the earth for emeralds to be shipped off to the Emerald City. The Glikkus Canals separate The Glikkus Scalps from the Gillikin towns below where they use an industrial rail line to bring their emeralds down to Gillikinese market town of Traum, the trading post for the whole emerald industry.
The only named Glikkun is the matriarchal chief of their people, Sakkali Oafish.
Due to spending a good part of their lives underground, Glikkuns are very bleached out; albinoid. All Glikkuns have blond, mossy hair, squinted eyes, and hunches. For weaponry, most carry short, stout dirks in sharkskin sheaths.
History[]
Years before the start of the series, it is known that it was Ozma the Warrior who conquered the Glikkus, and thus commandeered the emeralds for the Emerald City. It was then the next Ozma - Ozma Glikkusia who annexed the Glikkus from the Glikkuns, taking complete control over the new territory of Oz.
During Brrr’s early years before Dorothy (as seen in A Lion Among Men), he stumbles upon a Glikkun Masacre in the Gillikin market town of Traum - This group of Glikkuns, led by the chief Sakkali Oafish, had ventured down to Traum after Sakkali had gotten word of trade inequities. She declares she will call a strike unless the merchants from Shiz pay double the negotiated rate for the emeralds, however, since Shiz merchants are not authorized to enter into a new agreement, the Glikkuns become restless. The local garrison took to firing at the Glikkuns, killing many. Trying to help, the Glikkuns are told by Brrr to play dead, as he thinks that it's the only way to bypass the slaughter, however, they take his advice too late and become captured.
When Oz is ruled by the Emperor Apostle, the Emerald City sought out the Glikkun trolls under Sakkali Oafish to unite her people with them against the Free State of Munchkinland, however, she refuses due to the deep-seated grudge against Loyal Oz dating back to the Massacre at Traum.
