Wicked (also known as Wicked: Part One) is a musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu and adapted to the screen by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz from their 2003 stage musical of the same name, which is in turn based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire.[6] The film stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, with Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh in supporting roles.[7]
The film was released on November 22, 2024, while the second film, simply titled Wicked: Part Two will be released the following year on November 21, 2025.[8]
Synopsis
After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.
Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz , stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway's The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film also stars Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University's regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba's favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
The cast of characters also includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots); a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman) and four-time Emmy winner Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as the voice of Dr. Dillamond.
Wicked is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid), whose films, television shows and stage productions have earned a combined 46 Oscar nominations, 58 Emmy nominations and 36 Tony nominations, and by multiple Tony winner David Stone (Kimberly Akimbo, Next to Normal), with whom Platt produced the blockbuster Wicked stage musical. The executive producers are David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz and Jared LeBoff.
Based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winnie Holzman and by legendary Grammy and Oscar winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The Broadway stage musical is produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.[9]
Plot
In the Land of Oz, the citizens of Munchkinland celebrate the recent death of the Wicked Witch of the West. Glinda the Good tells the Witch's story: born from an affair between Melena, the wife of then-Governor Frexspar Thropp, and a traveling salesman, she was rejected from birth due to her unnaturally green skin, which led her to have a troubled childhood ("No One Mourns the Wicked"). When asked if she and the Witch were friends, Glinda replies that they knew each other and reflects on their past.
Years earlier, Elphaba Thropp arrives at the prestigious Shiz University with her younger paraplegic sister Nessa ("Dear Old Shiz"). Her fellow students mock her on account of her green skin. She meets a younger Glinda, then named Galinda Upland. Madame Morrible, Dean of Sorcery, takes Elphaba under her tutelage after Elphaba unintentionally reveals her magical powers ("The Wizard and I"), and makes Elphaba and Galinda share a bedroom to the discontent of both ("What Is This Feeling?"). During the semester, Nessa befriends Boq Woodsman, a happy-go-lucky Munchkin who has a crush on Galinda, while Elphaba encounters Fiyero Tigelaar, a rebellious Winkie Prince with whom Galinda is in love.
One of Shiz's professors, a talking Goat, Dr. Dillamond, informs Elphaba that other talkative animals around the land are losing their civil rights and abilities to speak, fearing he may be next ("Something Bad"). Elphaba assures Dillamond that Oz's ruler, a wizard she idolizes and hopes may change her skin color, will handle the matter.
Fiyero soon arranges a night of clubbing at the Ozdust Ballroom. Galinda convinces Boq to take Nessa so that she can go with Fiyero ("Dancing Through Life"). At the Ozdust, Galinda learns she will be allowed in Morrible's sorcery seminar at Elphaba's request as thanks for convincing Boq to ask out Nessa. Elphaba is mocked when she wears a hat Galinda gave to her as a slight. Guilty of her mistreatment of Elphaba, Galinda dances with her ("Ozdust Duet") and later repays Elphaba's kindness by giving her a makeover ("Popular").
The next day, Dr. Dillamond announces he is retiring due to animals now being disallowed to work at Shiz. His replacement, the unscrupulous Professor Nikidik, attempts to do a live experiment on a frightened lion cub. Elphaba and Fiyero intervene, escape campus, and release the cub back into the forest. After sharing a moment, Elphaba laments that Fiyero prefers Galinda over her ("I'm Not That Girl").
Elphaba receives a personalized summons from the Wizard, who has heard about her magical prowess. She, Morrible, and Galinda – who shortens her name to "Glinda" in honor of Dr. Dillamond's mispronunciation of it – journey to Oz's capital, the Emerald City, to meet him ("One Short Day"). After they greet each other ("A Sentimental Man"), he asks Elphaba if her heart's desire is to change her skin color, but she instead wishes to help the animals of Oz. The Wizard and Morrible encourage Elphaba to read from the sacred Grimmerie spellbook. Her incantation makes the Wizard's monkey guards painfully sprout wings, much to the glee of the Wizard and Morrible, who are excited at the prospect of using them as spies. Elphaba realizes that they are the ones behind the animals losing their humanity and that the Wizard does not have any real magic; Morrible used Elphaba's magic to unlock the Grimmerie's power and further subjugate the animals to consolidate the Wizard's rule. Horrified, Elphaba flees as Morrible informs the Oz citizens that Elphaba is a "wicked witch."
Glinda follows Elphaba to the palace attic, and attempts to convince her to reconcile with Morrible and the Wizard, but she decides to stop their plans. She bids an emotional farewell to Glinda, who supports her decision and confirms their deep friendship but stays behind, apprehended by the guards who interrogate her about her whereabouts so they can retrieve her. She uses the Grimmerie's flight spell to gain her ability to defy gravity using a broom and escapes from the city, evading the Wizard's guards and winged monkeys after sparking a power outage throughout Oz. After receiving a warning from Morrible that Elphaba is a "wicked witch," the students of Shiz evacuate campus with Fiyero fleeing the school grounds via horseback, and Nessarose witnesses Governor Thropp suffer a heart attack as they receive the news in their Munchkinland home. ("Defying Gravity").

Production
Development
Original Broadway cast members Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda and Idina Menzel as Elphaba were at one point mentioned as possible film leads. Lea Michele and Amy Adams were also rumored to be potential leads. Potential writers included Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, while J. J. Abrams, Rob Marshall and Ryan Murphy were mentioned as possible candidates for director for this first version of the film years earlier.[21]
In December 2012, following the success of Les Misérables, Marc Platt, also a producer of the stage version, announced the film was going ahead,[22] later confirming the film was aiming for a 2016 release.[23] After a long development, Universal announced in 2017 that the film would be released in theaters on December 20, 2019, with Stephen Daldry directing.[24] By 2024 however, Holzman was credited as the sole writer.[25] In August 2024, it was determined by the Writers Guild of America that Dana Fox collaborated with Holzman on the screenplay and that Craig Mazin contributed additional literary material.[26]
Pre-production
In May 2017, Schwartz stated that the film would feature "at least two" new songs.[27] However, by August 31, 2018, Universal put the film on hold, due to production scheduling, and gave the film adaptation of Cats the release date formerly held by the film. On February 8, 2019, Universal announced a new release date of December 22, 2021.[28] On April 1, 2020, Universal put the film on hold once again due to Universal shifting release dates amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and gave Sing 2 the 2021 release date.[29] On October 20, 2020, it was announced that Daldry had left the production due to scheduling conflicts.[30] On February 2, 2021, it was announced that Jon M. Chu would take over as director. Serving as executive producers would be Schwartz, Holzman, Fox, David Nicksay and Jared LeBoff.[31] In August, Alice Brooks was confirmed as the film's cinematographer, after working with Chu before on the film version of In the Heights.[32] In June 2022, Chu confirmed the hiring of Nathan Crowley as production designer.[33] Erivo would go onto say at that time that discussions were underway on what the film would look like, particularly its production design and visual style, and confirmed the hiring of Paul Tazewell as costume designer. Her request to him for Elphaba's costume when she becomes the Wicked Witch of the West involved "a Jean Paul Gaultier collection with a 'new world, kind of gilded age' feeling".[34] Erivo also contributed to several other parts of Elphaba's appearance, notably her hair and nails stating that, "I knew I wanted [Elphaba] to have micro braids and I wanted her to have a full set [of nails] for two reasons: [they are] a nod to my culture and a nod to the world of Oz." She also stated: "I imagined that her nails were a part of her magic – that they just grew out of her and she hadn’t yet discovered why, like her green skin."[35]
Casting
In November 2021, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were cast to portray Glinda and Elphaba, respectively.[36] On September 21, 2022, it was reported that Jonathan Bailey has joined the cast as Fiyero.[37] By October 2022, it was announced that Jeff Goldblum was in final talks to star as the Wizard.[38] By December of that year Goldblum would complete the talks to join the film.[39] Shortly followed by the castings of Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, Keala Settle, Aaron Teoh and Colin Michael Carmichael.[40][41][42]In April 2024, it was revealed at the 2024 CinemaCon that Peter Dinklage had been cast as Dr. Dillamond.[43]
Filming
Principal photography was set to commence in June 2022 at the Sky Studios Elstree facilities in the United Kingdom.[44] In July 2021, Stephen Schwartz indicated there were plans to film in Atlanta in 2021.[45] By April 26, 2022, Chu announced the film adaptation of the musical would be filmed in two parts.[46] In June, Schwartz added that confirmed that a new song will be written for one of the two films because they found it very difficult to get past 'Defying Gravity' without a break ...[47]On July 18, it was revealed that with the filming process settled at the newly-built Sky Studios in Elstree, England, rehearsals would begin in August with principal photography beginning in November.[48]
On September 23, Planning Statement, in support of a planning application submitted on behalf of Western Sky Limited, indicated that outdoor filming would occur at a site being developed at Ivinghoe Turf in Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire, UK.[49] The original planned shooting dates were between April 6, 2023 and July 14, 2023, with principal photography set to wrap on July 25, 2023, before filming was suspended on July 13, 2023 due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[50] Filming resumed on January 24, 2024 and concluded on January 26, with Chu then revealing that the vocals of the actors during the musical numbers were recorded live on set.[51] Academy Award-winning production sound mixer Simon Hayes collaborated with Chu on the recordings of the actors' vocals, using a variation of the same recording techniques that were implemented on Les Misérables.[52]
Post-production and visual effects
On February 6, 2024, it was confirmed on Twitter that Industrial Light & Magic and Framestore [53]provided the film's visual effects with Pablo Helman serving as visual effects supervisor, and that post-production work was in progress, with Chu working remotely with editor Myron Kerstein.[54]
Music
The soundtrack albums for both Wicked and Wicked Part Two will be released by Republic Records/Verve Label Group, Grande and Erivo's respective record labels, with the soundtrack of the first film being released on November 22, 2024.[55] In July 2024, it was revealed that John Powell had composed the incidental underscore for the film and will do the same for Part Two. Jeff Atmajian updated the late William David Brohn's original orchestrations for the songs and enlarged the orchestra from the stage version's original 23 musicians to 80 for the film. The recording sessions for the orchestra took place at AIR Studios in London, with the musical's original music director Stephen Oremus conducting the song cues and Powell conducting the incidental score cues. Greg Wells, Oremus and Schwartz served as music producers.[56]

Costumes and props were also on display in the lobby of the venue during this event.[60] On September 4, 2024, character posters were revealed ahead of the release of a new trailer the next day, which remixed "Defying Gravity" with Herbert Stothart's iconic "Wicked Witch/Miss Gulch" motif from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's now-Warner Bros.-owned 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz.[61] On October 27, 2024, a dance routine themed after the film was performed on an episode of the sixth season of ¿Quién es la máscara? (the Mexican version of The Masked Singer) to promote the film's release in Mexico.[62] On May 15, 2024, the film launched an interactive website for Shiz University, allowing fans to apply for a 2024 semester at the college before August 15, 2024. Merchandise contained a personalized acceptance letter from Madame Morrible herself, a map of the campus, a newspaper (reporting "Prince Fiyero spotted at Shiz"), a pin and a university jumper. With those applying late for the college being denied admission.[63] During the "Journey to OZ" Press Tour, The original Elphaba and Glinda, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, also attended the premiere in Los Angeles, CA.[64] Danna Paola and Cecilia de la Cueva, who portrayed the two characters in the Mexican production of the musical, attended the premiere in Mexico City.[65] Free listening parties of the film's soundtrack took place for the general public in numerous record stores across the US, from November 20 through 22.[66]
Release
Originally announced as one film, Wicked was split into two films in April 2022. The first half, titled simply Wicked, is scheduled to be released theatrically, with engagements in RealD 3D, IMAX and Dolby Cinema, on November 22, 2024, by Universal Pictures. It was scheduled to be released theatrically on December 25, 2024, but on March 14, 2023, it was announced that it would be moved up to a release date of November 27 to avoid competition with Avatar 3 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the former of which was later delayed to 2025 after Thunderbolts, and later Mufasa: The Lion King took its date. On April 16, 2023 director Jon M. Chu revealed the first look at Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. On July 1, 2024, it was reported that the film would be further moved up to a release date of November 22, which now places the film in direct competition with Gladiator II. The move has drawn comparison to the simultaneous release of the films Barbie and Oppenheimer in 2023, known colloquially as "Barbenheimer."[67]

Main article: Wicked Part Two
The direct sequel, Wicked Part Two, is scheduled to be released on November 26, 2025, after previously being set for a December 25, 2025 release.[68]
Trivia
- A non-musical film adaptation of Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West was in development during the 1990s. A week after the novel was published, author Gregory Maguire received movie offers from notable figures in Hollywood, the likes of which included Whoopi Goldberg. However, the rights were ultimately optioned by Demi Moore and her then-production company with Universal Pictures attached. Marc Platt was president of production at the studio during this time, and spent about three years developing a screenplay to no avail.[69]
- An early draft of the film was reportedly more faithful to Maguire's novel, but Platt felt that it was too dense and did not explore the relationship between Elphaba and Galinda in depth. Moreover, Platt believed that an accurate adaptation of the novel would require inner dialogue that would be challenging to depict cinematically.[69]
- While a second draft of the screenplay was being written, composer Stephen Schwartz met with Platt in 1997 and suggested the idea of redeveloping the film as a musical theatre production instead. He had previously discussed it with writer Winnie Holzman, and after presenting it to Platt, the latter saw potential in the musical aspect. Platt narrowed down three key factors that made a musical more fitting for a Wicked adaptation: aligning it with 1939's The Wizard of Oz, music as a way of emphasizing the heightened nature of a fantasy world, and having the characters literally turn to the audience to sing their emotions.[70]
- It took about a year before the final decision was made to adapt Wicked as a musical theatre production, with Schwartz and Holzman attached as the creative team.[70]
